PHYSICAL THERAPY TREATMENTS

Our Services

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Orthopedic Rehabilitation encompasses most of what we do in the outpatient setting. It simply refers to treatment of the musculoskeletal system. While this term is generally inclusive, it does not fully describe our treatment approach. At Jeff State Physical Therapy we strive to provide a more holistic approach encompassing all body systems (i.e. nerves, vascular tissues, organs, and, of course. the musculoskeletal system). In addition, general lifestyle factors are also addressed to some extent. We believe that to be healthy, all aspects of health should be examined and addressed appropriately. We will do our best to do our part in our specialty and guide you to other areas of expertise as appropriate.

Manual Therapy

We specialize in the use of manual therapy for acute and chronic pain problems. Manual Therapy simply refers to hands-on treatment. Most of these techniques come from osteopathic origins. We will briefly describe the ones we use the most.

Counterstrain: Counterstrain is a revolutionary treatment technique also known as positional release. This is a gentle and relatively pain-free technique that uses precise positioning of soft tissues in the body (specifically muscles and fascia) to allow for a release by correcting the neurological component within that tissue. This allows for normalization of tone and function of the strained tissue, allowing for realignment of associated joints, improved circulation and a reduction of pain. As a result of more recent studies and understanding of fascia, counterstrain is now applied to the fascia in addition to muscles. Because fascia is found throughout the body and is integrated into most bodily structures, counterstrain is now applied to all body systems. If you have not experienced counterstrain, we encourage you to give it a try!

Muscle Energy Technique: This technique uses positioning and your muscles' energy to move bones and joints into the direction that they need to go to obtain a neutral alignment. We find muscle energy technique especially works well for aligning the pelvis, sacrum, and lumbar spine. If you have a low back or SI (sacroiliac) problem, we can help.

Joint Mobilization: Moving joints is the focus here. This ranges from slight movement to more pronounced movement such as what we commonly think of as a manipulation or “popping” the joint. The goal is to restore normal movement of the “locked up” joint.

Soft Tissue Mobilization: This term is quite synonymous with massage, and there are many different types. Generally, we focus on deep tissue work, with the goal being to decrease tension of the soft tissues.

Therapeutic Exercise

Your treatment will likely include prescribed exercises. These exercises will be specific exercises to target and address your needs. We will review these exercises with you as much as is necessary for you to learn what you need to do. The general expectation is that you will be doing exercises at home multiple days each week during your plan of care. If you find that you need further assistance with exercising, we have agreements with local gyms to work with you in the gym setting. You may find that you want to continue gym exercises. We can help you with a home or gym routine that will best address your problem

Strength and Conditioning

There are times in a person's life when the body can develop weakness. This may be a result of a surgery when one is required to immobilize a part of the body, but can also be a result of disuse for whatever reason. Not uncommonly, general deconditioning takes place as one gets older and becomes less active. Localized weakness is often a result of dysfunction resulting in inhibition of strength. This is a way the body protects itself. Once the dysfunction is addressed, strength can return immediately. Whatever the case, we will seek to identify the problem and you get started on the path to regaining your strength!

Post-operative Rehabilitation

Physical therapy is indicated after many major surgeries, most commonly after joint replacements (i.e. knee and hip replacements). We are here to guide you through the process of healing, strengthening, and returning to your full potential!

Gait Training

Retaining one's ability to walk is one of the most important components of our mobility. Diseases and dysfunctions that affect balance are the primary offender here, but any trauma or surgery impacting the legs, spine, or head can result in abnormal gait. Abnormal gait impacts most of the body and can result in increased fall risk, abnormal wear on joints, and pain problems. Let us intervene and get you walking safely and in a way that will prolong your freedom to move!

Taping

Taping can help to immobilize a joint, reposition a joint, and/or provide proprioceptive feedback to the body. We primarily use taping for the last two purposes, and find that it can be especially helpful in assisting with control of movement to help prevent re-injury or aggravation of a given problem.

Modalities

We offer all the typical modalities offered in outpatient physical therapy: ultrasound, electrical stimulation, phonophoresis (the use of ultrasound to push medication through the skin), iontophoresis (electrically charged patches that push medication through the skin), traction (for the neck or lower back), heat, and ice. While these modalities can be helpful in reducing pain and promoting healing, we find that manual therapy and exercise are generally more effective.
